Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel & Crematorium in cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration has become a TSA Funeral Home Partner. This will be an added benefit to the communities we serve. Due to tightened security all crematory containers “Urns” must be able to pass through the x-ray security screen before they can be carried onto an airplane. Many containers are not however, “security friendly”. The TSA will not allow the cremated remains through the security checkpoint if they cannot pass the security screen. Out of respect for the deceased, TSA policy is that under no circumstance will a security screener open the container even if the passenger request that this be done. As a result of the TSA policy it is necessary for cremated remains be transported in containers that can be successfully x-rayed. However many containers that are “security friendly” may not be desirable as a permanent container for their loved ones. To help with the security issues related to travel with cremated remains. Smith-Lund-Mills has volunteered to become a TSA Funeral Home Partner. Smith-Lund-Mills has agreed to offer a complimentary “Remains Transfer Service” at no charge to the area travelers. This allows the local traveler to obtain a temporary “security friendly” container for transporting the remains via air travel. Once the traveler reaches their final destination they can contact their local “TSA Funeral Home Partner” at their destination and have the remains transferred free of charge to a more permanent and durable container. Please refer to the Transportation Security Administration's information page for more details. |
